How do animals get in the attic?
Is your attic secure?
The quick answer: most likely not! There are many reasons why. They all can be grouped into three basic reasons.
DESIGN AND MATERIALS
Common architectural design (especially since the early 1970’s) and common building materials i.e. aluminum, vinyl, use of staples, expanding foam, drying adhesives, decorative Styrofoam and others make it rather easy for nuisance wildlife to enter an attic. Squirrels and rats easily gnaw through these. Raccoons push or pull these things apart.
COMMON BUILDING PRACTICES
Typical building practices are notorious for allowing animal entry to the attic. Unfortunately, NONE of the building trades are ever trained in keeping raccoons, squirrels, rats, opossums, feral cats, bats, pigeons, civets or snakes from penetrating the attic of your home. Many contractors use the low bid sub-contractor to build various portions of the house. This brings various degrees of quality of workmanship. One can find “non-animal caused” openings into the structure ranging from !/2″ (rat and bat entry) to 1 foot by 2 foot gaping holes for anything to enter. This is not to degrade or disparage any contractor or trade. Centuries old tradition of protecting the residents from the weather, providing privacy and an aesthetic home is what these guys do. Most of them do it well. They simply do not know about animals getting into the attic!!
THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE
This one affects everyone and everything. Nowhere in this universe does it allow for a condition of stability. Something is either growing or decaying; there is no “stay the same”. Wind, rain, heat, (no ice here) salt in the air, algae, dry rot, warping wood, landscape plants growing through the soffit and many other things allow animals to enter the attic.
If you are the proactive type, find out if your attic is secure. The fee to do so is far less compared to later removing animals from the attic, making the repairs to keep them out and repairing whatever they damaged in your attic.
